Exploring Romania by Bike
A Different Way to Travel Through Transylvania and the Romania Countryside
Most travelers who plan a trip to Romania imagine winding mountain roads, medieval towns and quiet villages. Traditionally, they experience these places from a car window. However, cycling in Romania offers a very different way to experience the country. Some of the most memorable ways to travel to Romania happen on two wheels. When you cycle, the landscapes between villages become part of the journey.
Cycling changes the rhythm of travel. For example, a short stretch on the map can easily turn into a morning of discovery. Forests, fields and villages gradually unfold along the route.
Over the past few years, we have started designing more experiences around cycling in Romania. In particular, we focus on routes through the Romania countryside. Our in-house cycling specialists help shape these journeys. Thanks to their knowledge of terrain, roads and local conditions, we can create biking itineraries that feel adventurous while remaining accessible to travelers with different levels of experience.
Cycling Through Transylvania’s Villages
One of the most rewarding places for cycling in Romania is Transylvania. The region is famous for medieval towns and fortified churches. However, cyclists often remember the countryside between them even more.
Small roads connect Saxon villages such as Viscri, Biertan, Mălâncrav and Alma Vii. As a result, travelers can ride through landscapes that have changed little over centuries. Hills roll gently across farmland, orchards line village entrances and fortified churches rise above tiled rooftops.
Cycling here also reveals the geography of Transylvania more clearly. A village that seems close on a map may require a steady climb through meadows filled with wildflowers. Eventually, another village appears beyond the hills.

Riding the Roads of the Carpathian Mountains
For cyclists who prefer dramatic landscapes, the Carpathian Mountains offer some of the most memorable rides in Eastern Europe. Romania’s mountain roads have gained international recognition among drivers. But they are equally impressive from a bicycle.
The most famous example is the Transfăgărășan Road, frequently described as one of the most spectacular drives in the world. Cycling it reveals views that drivers often pass too quickly to appreciate as the road climbs through forests and alpine slopes.
The most famous example is the Transfăgărășan Road. It is frequently described as one of the most spectacular drives in the world. However, cycling the road reveals details that drivers often pass too quickly to appreciate. As the road climbs through forests and alpine slopes, the landscape opens gradually.
Other mountain routes also offer remarkable rides. For instance, Transalpina, Transrarău and Transbucegi attract cyclists who enjoy long climbs and sweeping descents. Each road crosses remote terrain where forests stretch across valleys and rivers cut through limestone gorges.
In addition, these routes highlight the scale of Romania’s wilderness. The country still contains some of the largest virgin forests in Europe outside Scandinavia. Meanwhile, the Carpathian region supports large wildlife populations, including bears, wolves and lynx.
The Landscapes Between the Mountains
Not every cycling route in Romania involves mountain passes. In fact, much of the country consists of hills, plains and river valleys that are ideal for relaxed rides.
The Romania countryside is particularly well suited to multi-day cycling itineraries. Distances between villages remain manageable. At the same time, the terrain changes constantly. Forest edges open into meadows, rivers follow the road and traditional villages appear after long stretches of farmland.
These routes also combine well with guided tours of Romania. For example, a cycling day might end with a visit to a fortified church. Alternatively, travelers might stop at a local market or enjoy dinner prepared by a village host using ingredients from nearby farms.
Designing Biking Experiences for Different Travelers
Cycling holidays can feel intimidating to travelers who do not consider themselves athletes. Therefore, one of our goals is to design biking routes suitable for different experience levels.
Some travelers prefer relaxed rides through Transylvania’s villages. In these cases, distances remain moderate and the focus stays on landscapes and culture. Meanwhile, other travelers choose more demanding routes across mountain roads. These journeys may combine cycling with hiking or wildlife observation.
Fortunately, Romania’s geography makes both options possible. Mountains, hills and plains are distributed across the country in almost equal proportions. As a result, itineraries can shift easily from challenging climbs to gentle countryside rides.
