Transylvanian truffle hunting experience

Truffles are a highly sought-after culinary ingredient. While the highest quality truffles are best known to originate from Italy and France, culinary experts agree that the truffles found in Romania are of equal or even superior quality.

One of the reasons that the truffles found in Romania are of such exquisite quality is that they are found in the rich soil beneath the pristine and sprawling old-growth forests of Transylvania. These untouched forests play a very important role in truffle production because these mushrooms especially thrive around the roots of trees.

There are two kinds of truffles which depend on the season in which they are found. Appropriately these truffles are called summer truffles, hunted from May through August, and winter truffles hunted between September and December.

You can always come to Romania and spend a day in the life of a truffle hunter – learn how the guides train and work with their hunting dogs, how to spot good truffle locations, and how to harvest these treasures. This experience will give you a hands-on appreciation of the gorgeous old-growth forests of Transylvania.

Additionally, by working alongside a guide and his specially trained truffle-hunting dogs you will get to experience the excitement that comes with plunging deep into the forest in pursuit of these “diamonds”. At the end of the day after you wash the dirt out from under your nails, you will be rewarded with a meal centered around the truffles found during the day.
