Danube Cruise Extension in Romania: What to Do After the Ship
A Danube cruise extension in Romania continues the trip where the ship stops: at a river port about an hour south of Bucharest, the capital. The Carpathian Mountains lie a few hours to the north. Several of the long sailings that start in Budapest finish at Giurgiu, on the left bank of the river opposite the Bulgarian town of Ruse. Many passengers go straight from the dock to the airport. We would like those travelers to stay a few days longer. This guide explains where the extension begins, how many days to add and what we plan for them.
Where a Danube Cruise Extension Begins in Romania
Genoese merchants founded Giurgiu as a Danube port in the 14th century. In 1869 it received the railway to Bucharest, described as the first in Romania. The Friendship Bridge, about 2,223 meters long and built between 1952 and 1954, now links it to Ruse. The port lies roughly 60 kilometers from the capital, so the transfer takes about an hour by road.
Not every sailing ends in the same place. Some finish at Giurgiu, and others finish in Bucharest itself or at a different Danube dock. Dates and directions change from year to year. Confirm the actual disembarkation point before you book the hotel or flight for a Danube cruise extension. We plan the transfer to the capital as part of the program.
What Bucharest Offers After Vienna and Budapest
Romanian is a Latin language, and between the wars Bucharest was nicknamed Little Paris. The city still has an Arc de Triomphe. The Romanian Athenaeum, a concert hall that opened in 1888, hosts the George Enescu International Festival, a classical music festival named after Romania’s best-known composer. Calea Victoriei, one of the oldest major avenues in the center, runs past palaces, churches, hotels and museums. The beer hall Caru’ cu bere has served the Old Town since 1899. A traveler who loves France or Italy will recognize a good deal of this. The landscape north of the city then takes the trip somewhere new.
The Palace of the Parliament dates from the Communist era, which ended in 1989. Guinness World Records lists it as the heaviest building in the world, and visits are by guided tour. For the departure day, the Țiriac Collection of around 150 cars stands across the road from Henri Coandă Airport, in a former cash-and-carry building. Ion Țiriac, a former tennis player turned businessman, began buying rare cars at auctions when he was young. The museum opened to the public in 2013. It fits the hours before a flight.

How Long a Danube Cruise Extension Should Be
We usually plan three to five days. That gives time for a night or two in Bucharest, a crossing of the mountains and at least one night in a village. The route north follows a natural order. Sinaia, a mountain town, comes first, with Peleș Castle. Brașov, a medieval city in the Carpathians, and the Saxon villages of southern Transylvania follow.
The Saxons were German-speaking settlers who arrived in the Middle Ages and built their villages around fortified churches. Viscri’s church dates from the 13th century and belongs to the UNESCO listing of Transylvanian villages with fortified churches. Our guide to five favorite Saxon villages also describes Biertan and MeÈ™endorf.
A Private Danube Cruise Extension With Us
A couple who took our extension wrote to us afterward: “Our favorite part of the trip was the post-cruise time in Romania.” They called the country “diverse, welcoming, thriving and fascinating” and their guide, who drove and guided for the entire stay, “superb”. They also named the private format as a reason: “we were on our own and not in a larger group”. A return visit, they said, would include time with the wildlife of the Danube Delta.
Why Continue to Romania From the Danube
The river already points there. Many sailings that leave Budapest finish on Romania’s bank of the Danube, and the capital is an hour away. The country is therefore the last stop of the cruise itself. A flight home leaves from Bucharest either way, so staying a few days adds no extra leg to the trip.
Romania also offers a change of scene after a week of Central European capitals. The Carpathians and the Saxon villages lie within a few hours’ drive of the dock. The country speaks a Latin language and feels familiar to anyone who loves France or Italy. We joined Virtuoso in May 2025 and are the first and only Romanian company in the network. Advisors who send clients down the Danube can ask us to design the days after the ship.
Planning Around Water Levels and Flights
River itineraries change. Cruise operators warn that sailings can shift because of water levels, holidays and other factors. Low water has disrupted river cruises in recent seasons. Leave a day of slack between the scheduled disembarkation and any fixed commitment. Book the land program before the ship departs. It is much easier to plan the days after the boat while you are still at home. Our guide to reaching Romania covers the flight routes into Bucharest and Sibiu.
Anyone planning a Danube cruise extension for 2027, and any advisor with clients on the river, can send us the disembarkation port and date. We will design the days that follow.
